George Zarkadakis is an active science communicator. This is a list of some of his projects.

 

Magazines

Editor-in-Chief of Focus Magazine (1999-2007), under licence from Gruner und Jahr/Mondadori (300,000 readers). Also published Focus Junior (children 8-12), and Focus DVD, a series of selected science documentaries.

Designed the magazine’s web site (focusmag.gr) which won the Golden HERMES Award for Best Content 2004 (450,000 unique visitors per month).

 

Television

Wrote, and co-presented the popular science series “Evrika!” with actor Antonis Kafentzopoulos; Mega Channel (2004-2006) - ratings 18%.

Special guest in History Channel’s documentary series “Greece: Engineering an Empire” (2006).

Scientific advisor and co-presenter in environment program “Green Team”; ERT (2007-2008).

 

Book Publishing

Publisher of Avgo Books, the popular science imprint of Oceanida Publications.

Written and published a popular science book on consciousness (see Noetics).

 

Science Governance

Facilitator in the EU-funded project “Meeting of Minds”, for the development of European citizens’ consensus on regulating scientific research on neuroscience and neurotechnologies. (2005-2006)

 

Events Organizer

Organized the first Cafes Scientifiques in Greece (2003-2005) for which he was awarded the honor of Chevalier des Palmes Academiques by the French Republic.

Member of organizing committee of Space Camp 2006, for the European Space Agency.

Organizes and facilitates public debates on science and technology.

Partner of the British Council in the “Beautiful Science” project for communicating science and developing a new generation of science communicators in South-east Europe.; Chair of Jury for the Famelab competition. (2007-2008).

Organizer and facilitator of public lectures by scientists.

Guest of the Cheltenham Science Festival 2008.

Member of Jury for the International Science Film Festival of Athens (2006-2008).
