George Zarkadakis was born in Athens in 1964. He studied Systems Engineering at City University, London. He holds a doctorate degree in Artificial Intelligence and has undertaken further scientific research in the fields of complexity theory, emergent phenomena and consciousness. Following his academic years he pursued a professional career as an information technology consultant working for the European Commission, for Andersen Consulting, and becoming a business executive for Silicon Graphics. In 2000 he launched the popular science magazine Focus in Greece and remained as its Editor-in-Chief till 2007, making it one of the most successful titles in the country. He is an active science communicator, organizing science and technology events for the public, as well as popularizing scientific ideas on television and the media at large. He is currently the publisher of Avgo Books and the managing director of Feline Quanta.

 

His first novel "The Secrets of the Lands Without" was published in 1994 and was concurrently released on the World Wide Web, as the "first Greek Novel on the Internet". In 1996 he published "East of the End", a runner up for the prestigious Greek State Literary Prize. "Archipelago Republic" was published in 1999. George has also published short stories, poems, essays and journalistic articles in various collections, journals and magazines. In 2001 he published the popular science book “The Mystery of Mind: how the brain evokes consciousness”. In 2004 he published his fourth novel “The Passage” in Greece and Italy (2007).  His new novel (“The Island Survival Guide”) has been published in Spain and Greece in 2009. A number of his plays have been staged in Athens.
